How Much Does a Car Battery Replacement Cost?
The short answer from our dated data is $80 to $500 for a typical 12V battery replacement in the US. That is a wide spread because the same job can mean a $90 battery you fit yourself in a car park or a $500 dealer visit for a luxury car. The table shows the sourced range for each place you might buy.
| Where you buy | Battery price | Installation |
|---|---|---|
| Warehouse club (Costco, Sam's Club) | $90 to $180 | Sam's Club installs eligible purchases free. Costco does not install batteries. |
| Costco | $90 to $180 | Costco does not install batteries. |
| Parts chain (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance) | $90 to $450 | Often free with purchase. AutoZone's own page says free installation on most vehicles at most locations; limits apply by vehicle and store. |
| Walmart | $80 to $190 | Free on Walmart batteries; $15 on batteries bought elsewhere. |
| AAA Mobile Battery Service | $180 to $300 | Installation and free recycling of the old battery are included. |
| Valvoline Instant Oil Change | Still checking | Valvoline says a battery test and replacement can take about 15 minutes. We have no verified price or warranty yet. |
| Independent shop | $120 to $300 | Labour is typically $40 to $75. |
| Dealership | $250 to $500 | Installed price includes $50 to $100 labour. |
| Mobile or roadside installer | $150 to $350 | Call-out and fitting are included in the price. |
| Battery specialist (Batteries Plus, Interstate) | $185 to $400 | Installation varies by store. Ask when you order. |

What Makes a Car Battery Replacement Cost More?
Battery type
Flooded batteries are the cheapest, with some starting around $79. AGM batteries can exceed $450. If your car has stop-start, you need AGM or EFB. A standard flooded battery is not a valid replacement, so there is no cheap shortcut. Our AGM vs EFB vs flooded guide explains how to tell which you have.
Where you buy and who fits it
Installation is the big swing factor. Walmart and many parts chains fit a battery for free when you buy from them, an independent shop charges about $40 to $75 for labour, and a dealer includes $50 to $100 of labour in a higher price. Mobile and roadside services build the call-out into the total. See the retailer price comparison for install policies side by side, or read about mobile car battery replacement cost.
Registration, coding and fees
Many BMW, Audi, VW and Mercedes cars want the new battery registered with the car. That can add cost at a shop and makes DIY harder. California adds a $2 nonrefundable battery fee. A core charge is refunded when you return your old battery. Read battery registration and coding explained before you order.
Hybrid and electric cars
Most hybrids and EVs still have a small 12V battery that costs like any other. The big traction battery is a separate and much larger expense. See hybrid car battery replacement cost and electric car battery replacement cost, and always check the warranty first.
Replace It Yourself or Pay Someone?
If your battery sits under the bonnet and your car does not need registration, a DIY swap takes under half an hour with basic tools and you keep the labour. Safety comes first: wear eye protection and gloves, keep sparks and flames away, disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. Our step-by-step guide to replacing a car battery yourself covers it. Never work on hybrid or EV high-voltage batteries.
Not sure the battery is the problem? A flat battery and a failing alternator look alike. Try the dead battery or alternator checker, then confirm with the voltage checker before you spend money.
Car Battery Replacement Cost by Retailer
Many drivers search by store. Each of these pages is an independent guide, not affiliated with the brand, with dated prices and a link to the calculator set to that retailer.
- Walmart car battery replacement cost: free install on its own batteries.
- Costco car battery replacement cost: low prices, no installation.
- AAA car battery replacement cost: mobile service with fitting included.

How to Read a Car Battery Quote
Two quotes for the same job can look very different because they bundle different things. A good quote lists the battery (brand, type and group size), the fitting charge, any environmental or battery fee, the core charge and whether it is refundable, the warranty length, and whether registration or coding is included. If a quote gives one number and nothing else, ask what is in it. The cheapest quote is only cheapest if it covers everything you need.
Watch for three common gaps. First, a shelf price with no fitting: Costco, for example, does not install, so a low sticker price can turn into a higher total once you pay someone to fit it. Second, a battery that is the wrong type for your car. A start-stop car fitted with a standard flooded battery will not last, and the seller's quote may not warn you. Third, a core charge you forget to claim back by returning the old battery.
Choosing the Right Battery for Your Car
Price matters, but a battery that does not fit or does not suit your car is no bargain. Four things decide whether a battery is right.
- Group size. This is the physical case size and terminal layout, so it sits in your tray and your cables reach. Find it in your owner's manual or on the label of your current battery, or use our group size finder.
- Type. Flooded, EFB or AGM. Match what the car came with, and never step down. Our guide to AGM vs EFB vs flooded explains each.
- Cold cranking amps. Your manual states the minimum. Use the CCA calculator only as a starting point and never go below the manual's figure.
- Warranty. A longer free-replacement period is worth paying a little extra for. Use the warranty calculator to see what a prorated credit is really worth.
Is It Really the Battery?
A flat battery is a symptom. Before you spend, rule out the easy causes. Corroded or loose terminals can stop a healthy battery from delivering current, and cleaning them costs almost nothing (see how to clean battery terminal corrosion). A failing alternator can leave a new battery flat within days. A parasitic drain, such as a light left on or a faulty module, can flatten any battery overnight.
Measure first. Our voltage checker turns a multimeter reading into a plain verdict, and the dead battery or alternator checker works from symptoms. If you are not sure how old your battery is, the battery life estimator compares its age with AAA's guidance of roughly three to five years.
Where to Buy: Pros and Cons
Warehouse clubs
Low shelf prices and decent warranties, but no installation at Costco and a membership requirement. Best for confident DIYers or anyone with a friend who can help. Read about Costco car battery replacement cost.
Walmart and parts chains
The best mix of price and convenience for many drivers, because fitting is often free with purchase. Vehicle and store limits apply, so call ahead if your battery is hard to reach. See Walmart car battery replacement cost.
Independent shops and specialists
Useful when you want advice, a particular brand, or help with a tricky car. You pay labour, but a good shop will test the charging system at the same time.
Dealers
The highest price, but the right battery for the car and correct registration where it is needed. Worth considering for newer luxury cars that need coding.
Mobile and roadside services
You pay for convenience. If you are stranded, or the battery is awkward to reach, it can be the right call. Compare mobile car battery replacement cost and AAA's service with in-store fitting before you decide.
Common Mistakes That Cost Money
- Buying on shelf price alone and forgetting fitting, fees and the core charge.
- Replacing the battery when the real problem is a corroded terminal or a failing alternator.
- Fitting a standard flooded battery in a car that needs AGM or EFB.
- Skipping registration on a car that needs it, then replacing the new battery early.
- Throwing away the receipt, which you need for a warranty claim.
- Leaving the old battery at home and losing the core refund.
Hybrid and Electric Cars
Almost every hybrid and EV still has a small 12V battery that runs the electronics and wakes the car. When it fails the car can seem dead even though the big battery is full. It costs like any other car battery, and in many cars it needs to be AGM. The large traction battery is a different matter, with costs and warranties that need their own calculators: see hybrid car battery replacement cost, electric car battery replacement cost, and our guide to the 12V battery in hybrids and EVs. Never work on a high-voltage battery yourself.
How We Keep These Prices Honest
Every number on this site comes from a data file with a source link and a check date. Where we could only find a third-party guide, we show a range and say so. Where we could not find a number at all, such as Valvoline's battery prices, we say "we're still checking" instead of guessing. Prices change, so confirm with the store before you buy. You can see every source on our sources page and how each estimate is built on how we calculate.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a car battery replacement cost?
Using our dated retail data, a replacement ranges from about $80 to $500 depending on where you buy, the battery type and whether installation is included. Warehouse clubs and Walmart are at the low end; dealerships, specialists and mobile installers sit higher. AGM batteries cost more than flooded ones.
Is it cheaper to replace a car battery yourself?
Usually yes, because you skip labour that independent shops price at $40 to $75. DIY is not right for every car: batteries in the boot or under a seat, cars that need battery registration, and hybrid or EV high-voltage packs should be left to professionals.
Do auto parts stores install batteries for free?
Often, with a purchase. Parts chains frequently fit the battery free, though vehicle and store limits apply. Walmart installs its own batteries free and charges $15 on batteries bought elsewhere. Costco does not install, and Sam's Club installs eligible purchases free.
Why are AGM batteries more expensive?
AGM batteries use a different internal construction that handles frequent deep cycling and the electrical loads of start-stop cars. Flooded batteries start around $79, while AGM batteries can exceed $450.
What is a battery core charge?
A core charge is a refundable deposit added to the price of a new battery. You get it back when you return your old battery for recycling. Costco's core charge is typically about $15; check the store for its current amount.
How long does a car battery last?
There is no single answer: heat, short trips, long periods parked and start-stop use all shorten life. Our battery life estimator gives a quick read from age, climate and driving habits, and a voltage test is the best way to confirm it.
How do I know if my car battery needs replacing?
Slow cranking, clicking, dim lights, a battery warning light or a battery that will not hold charge are common signs. Use our voltage checker with a multimeter, or the dead battery or alternator checker to narrow it down.
Does my car need battery registration after replacement?
Many BMW, Audi, VW and Mercedes models expect the new battery to be registered or coded so the charging system treats it correctly. Check your owner's manual or ask the shop before you buy.
Can I replace an AGM battery with a regular battery?
No, not if the car was built for AGM. Start-stop cars need AGM or EFB, and a standard flooded battery is not a valid replacement. Match the type to the original or the manual.
What's the cheapest place to replace a car battery?
On our data the lowest starting prices are at Walmart and the warehouse clubs, and installation is free at Walmart on its own batteries. DIY removes labour entirely. The calculator above shows the cheapest option for your inputs.
