What Is the Average Car Battery Replacement Cost?

RepairPal's estimate for a typical replacement is $423 to $460 in total, split into roughly $364 to $374 for the part and $59 to $86 for labour, as reported by Preferred Mechanic. Treat that as a dealer or repair-shop figure. If you buy at a warehouse club or Walmart and have the battery fitted for free or fit it yourself, you can pay far less. Our retail data gives a wider, more useful span of $80 to $500.

Car Battery Replacement Cost 2026 by Battery Type

Flooded batteries start around $79 and AGM batteries can exceed $450, so battery type moves the price more than almost anything else. Using Walmart as an example and the modelling rules on our methodology page, a mid-size car comes out at about $108 with a flooded battery and $163 with AGM. Start-stop cars need AGM or EFB, so the cheaper option is not available to them.

What Pushes the Cost Above Average?

  • AGM or EFB batteries for start-stop cars.
  • Battery registration or coding on many European models.
  • Batteries located in the boot or under a seat, which add labour.
  • Dealer fitting and mobile call-outs.

Electric and hybrid traction batteries are a different scale of cost; see hybrid and electric battery replacement cost.

Why a Single Average Misleads

When a site quotes one average car battery replacement cost, it is blending very different purchases: a free-fitted Walmart battery, a dealer visit for a luxury car, a mobile call-out at night. Averaging them produces a number that almost nobody actually pays. That is why this page shows ranges by where you buy and battery type, and why the calculator on the home page asks for your own details. Use the average as a sanity check, not a budget.

Car Battery Replacement Cost 2026: Typical Ranges by Situation

You fit it yourself

You pay the battery price only. In our data that is from about $80 at the low end for a basic battery to several hundred dollars for AGM. You also need basic hand tools and a safe place to work. Our DIY savings calculator shows whether it is worth your time, and the step-by-step guide covers the job safely.

You buy where fitting is free

Walmart installs its own batteries free, and many parts chains fit with purchase, with vehicle and store limits. The total is then close to the battery price, plus any fees. See Walmart's page and the retailer comparison.

You pay an independent shop

Battery $120 to $300 plus about $40 to $75 for labour in the figures we use. A shop can also test your charging system while the battery is out, which is worth asking for.

You go to a dealer or call a mobile installer

Dealers are quoted at about $250 to $500 installed and mobile services at about $150 to $350 including call-out. You pay for convenience, brand knowledge or the right registration for your car.

How Much Do Hybrid and EV Batteries Add to the Average?

They are a different category. The traction batteries in hybrids and EVs cost thousands of dollars and have long warranties. They are not part of the average for a standard 12V replacement, and mixing them in would distort it. Look at hybrid and electric battery replacement cost separately, and check the warranty before you pay anything.

How Prices Have Moved

We do not have a sourced price history yet, so we do not claim that prices have risen or fallen. What we can say is that older guides, including some that still circulate with a 2026 headline, show figures from earlier years that are now too low for many newer cars, as AAA's mobile battery estimate illustrates. We will add a history once we have dated, sourced snapshots to compare. Until then, treat any "prices are up X%" claim you read elsewhere with caution.

How to Pay Less Than Average

  1. Identify your exact battery type and group size before you shop.
  2. Compare the total, including fitting and fees, in the calculator.
  3. Ask about free fitting and free testing.
  4. Bring your old battery back to claim any core refund.
  5. Keep the receipt and check the warranty with the warranty calculator.
  6. Extend the life of the battery you buy: see how long car batteries last.

Where These Figures Come From

The retailer ranges come from a third-party 2026 guide checked in October 2026, the shop-level estimate is RepairPal's as reported by that guide, and the modelling rules are on how we calculate. Official retailer pages block automated checks, so we show ranges, not exact prices, and we say so. Everything is listed on the sources page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average car battery replacement cost in 2026?

There is no single average. A typical shop-level job is about $423 to $460 in total according to a RepairPal estimate, while our dated retail data spans $80 to $500 depending on where you buy and who fits it.

Why does the average change so much?

It mixes DIY, free in-store fitting, independent shops and dealers. Averages across these hide the real choice you have. Use the calculator for your own total.

How often do I pay for a new battery?

Heat, short trips and start-stop use shorten battery life. Test yearly after the battery passes its third year.
